Games of Chase, Capture the Mountain, and many more made-up adventures usually ended up at the tower. The tower provided a safe zone, a hiding spot, or in many instances a dry spot when a sudden rain came. I can still see in my mind a child or several children all running towards that tower for the safety it offered. With great speed we scampered up the old weathered ladder, and fell onto the floor, panting to catch our breath. We all had our share of splinters, but that was a small price to pay for all the comforting benefits it provided.
This scenario reminds me of the verse in Proverbs, “The name of the LORD is a strong tower; the righteous run to it and are safe.” And the Psalmist also declared, “...you are my fortress, my refuge in times of trouble.” When I am troubled by a situation or decision that I must make, I can call upon the name of the LORD and there I find the peace, refuge and shelter that I need. It is important to not dawdle or try to work things out on my own. I must run immediately to my safe place. And when I run to God’s strong tower, I don’t have to worry about splinters!
