Adolph enjoyed hunting, playing cards, collecting trains, helping neighbors, spending time with family, and buying flowers for his wife through their 55 years of marriage. He smiled at everyone he met and was well liked in the community.
He lived his entire life on the Getterman Guernsey Farm. When his son David took over the dairy operation, Adolph began to do custom work, hiring himself out to plant and harvest for area farmers. Many were grateful for his help while they were sick or injured or when there was too much work to do in a limited amount of time due to weather conditions. He was happy to be of help. Harvest was his favorite time of year. While he often worked long hours, he enjoyed helping his fellow farmers, the sense of satisfaction from bringing in the crops, and the “good tired” that he felt at the end of the day. His final harvest was his most memorable as he trained his grandson Brandon to take over for him.
Always concerned about the harvest of souls, Adolph supported missionaries and served as a church elder. He shared his faith with others, seeing many of them enter into personal relationships with Jesus. To him, there was no greater joy.
Adolph was preceded in death by his parents, Ezekiel and Evangeline Getterman; brother, Rudolph Getterman; and sister, Isabel (Sheldon) Anderson.
He is survived by his treasured bride, Elsie Getterman; son, David (Cassie) Getterman; and two grandchildren, Brandon Getterman and Brittany Getterman. He is also survived by nieces and nephews, and many other relatives and friends.
The visitation will be on Friday, January 18, 2019 from 4:00-7:00 PM at the Jefferson Funeral Home in Oaktown. The funeral will be held on Saturday, January 19, 2019 at 2:00 PM at the Community First Church in Oaktown with Pastor Andrew Lincoln officiating. Family and friends may call at 1:00 PM until the time of the service. Burial will take place in the Cedar Valley Cemetery.
Blessed be the memory of faithful harvester, Adolph Walter Getterman.
