I wanted to plant flowers.
I thought that seeds, once in the ground,
Would sprout right up in hours.
My daddy took me to the store,
And I was quite delighted.
Had made me feel excited.
I looked long at the seed-pack fronts
At all the lovely hues
And took my time selecting one
That I would want to use.
The picture with the most appeal
Was a variety
Of pinks and reds and oranges.
That was the choice for me.
My daddy gave instructions in
His always helpful way
For me to dig holes deep enough
And water every day.
He said that sunny days and rain
Would give the seeds a start,
But for a pretty garden plot,
I’d have to do my part.
I chose a spot beside the house,
Where I could watch them grow,
Then scraped a little dirt aside
And dropped the seeds below.
And though the sunshine did its part,
For rain there was a need,
And I’d not water as I should,
But stayed inside to read.
And while I checked it every day,
My garden never grew.
Not leaf nor stem nor blossom showed.
With planting, I was through.
