Rose could no longer drive, so I drove her to the town where she had taught to do errands within the school district. After going to the high school and visiting with co-workers while the IT department worked on her computer, we stopped at the district office to file paperwork for retirement and her cancer insurance policy. Afterwards, we stopped in a town closer to home to buy groceries. It was here that I learned that my sister had a beautiful habit whenever she went grocery shopping. She always bought non-perishable items that she would not use, but bought simply for the purpose of giving to the local food shelf.
When my sister died four months later, her generous nature showed through once again. Her request was that instead of sending flowers, people bring backpacks full of school supplies for children in need in the district in which she had taught for almost 30 years. At her funeral, there were 54 backpacks donated. At the county fair the following week, the local 4H group, of which Rose had been a leader for many years, collected even more backpacks.
This fall, in honor of Rose’s memory, I bought a backpack and all of the supplies needed for one second grader in the school that I work. It is only a start to cultivating the lifestyle of generosity that my sister lived. When I grow up, I want to be like Rose.
"The wicked borrow and do not repay, but the righteous give generously" Psalm 37:21
