“Yes, Gina?”
“Today in Sunday school we learned about the three men who were saved by God from
burning up in the fiery furnace.”
“Oh, yes. That’s a great story, Gina.”
“Our Sunday school teacher says the lesson of that story is that God can do anything.”
“Yes, Gina. There’s nothing God can’t do.
“So, Mom... does that mean God can heal Grandpa?”
“Well, that’s a tough question. God does have the power to heal. So, if it’s His Will then yes, He can heal Grandpa.”
“Mom, you said Grandpa is dying. You said that’s why he’s at the hospice center.”
“Yes, that’s true.”
“Mom, I don’t want Grandpa to die.”
“Neither do I, Gina.”
“So how come you didn’t ask God to heal Grandpa instead of putting him in the hospice?”
“It’s hard to know God’s will, Gina. We just do our best to follow Him, pray for direction and then make our decisions based on that. Based on everything we know, your Dad and I felt hospice was the best decision for Grandpa.”
“But if we pray for Grandpa to be healed, God could heal him. Right?”
“God could heal him. Yes, He could. But I can’t say for sure that He will.”
“Why wouldn’t He? You agreed with my teacher: God can do anything.”
“Oh, He can, Gina. I know He can. But just because God CAN; it doesn’t mean He will. It may be God’s will for Grandpa to go to heaven.”
“But how can that be? If God can heal Grandpa, why wouldn’t He?”
“Oh, Gina. I know you love your Grandpa. And none of us want him to die. But none of us is God - so none of us can say what His will might be.”
“I just don’t understand.”
“We can’t know God’s mind. We can only trust Him, and know He will be there with us, no matter what. In that Bible story of the three men, they decided to follow God even when they were thrown into the furnace.”
“Yes, that was so cool. God didn’t let them get burned up, even though it looked impossible for them to not get burnt up. They told everybody they had faith God would save them - and He did.”
“That’s right, Gina. They stepped into that furnace believing God would rescue them. But did you also learn those men told everyone they were completely ready to die if God didn’t save them?”
“You mean they were ready to get burnt to death?”
“Yes. They told the men who put them in the furnace they believed God would save them from the fire; but even if He didn’t, they would still continue to trust Him.”
“Wow. That’s faith.”
“Yes, that’s faith.”
“So, does that mean we shouldn’t pray for Grandpa?”
“Of course we should! The Bible tells us to pray for the things we want. Let’s pray together. But let’s remember: God’s answer may be to take Grandpa to heaven. I believe Grandpa will have a perfect body in heaven, so that may be the way God will heal Grandpa. And if that happens, we can be sure God will stand with our family to comfort and guide us through the sadness we will feel if Grandpa dies.”
"Ok, Mom, let’s pray."

Daniel 3: 16-18: Shadrach, Meshach and Abednego replied to him, “King Nebuchadnezzar, we do not need to defend ourselves before you in this matter. If we are thrown into the blazing furnace, the God we serve is able to deliver us from it, and he will deliver us from Your Majesty’s hand. But even if he does not, we want you to know, Your Majesty, that we will not serve your gods or worship the image of gold you have set up.”
