Heidi tried her best to focus on the rest of the service. The pastor had mentioned asking God where He could use you and her mind went off on an elaborate plan for a single mom’s ministry. One that involved childcare while the moms learned important skills like car maintenance and finances. But with trying to support her family and getting kids to their activities, who has time to learn all the things she used to rely on Jim for? No, her life as a single mom was way too busy to even find the time to attend such a ministry, let alone start one. But it sure would be helpful to have, if she had it on the calendar early enough.
Leaving the sanctuary, someone tapped her on the shoulder. “Heidi, can I walk with you to pick up your kids? I’ve an idea for a new ministry and feel God is telling me that you should help organize and lead it.” As they walked, he described to Heidi a single mom’sministry very similar to the one that she had envisioned during the service. Heidi knew God was confirming her vision.
“That sounds wonderful, Pastor Alex, but I just don’t think I can. I work two jobs and the kids seem to have something every night. The thought of adding one more thing to my schedule is overwhelming right now. I don’t even know if I’d have time to attend if you do get it up and running.” Heidi knew Pastor Alex would accept her honesty. She hadn’t ever felt that before coming to church here.
“I believe most single moms feel just as overwhelmed. That’s a huge reason we feel it’s important to have such a ministry. I think one Saturday a month of Mom’s night out would be about as much as most would fit into their schedule.”
“If that.” Heidi thought about her own calendar. It seemed to fill up faster than a rain gauge during a hurricane. “Are you thinking Mom’s Night Out for the name of the ministry?”
“I think that is a little overused.” Pastor Alex chuckled. “The leadership team has been talking and praying about this for a few months and are thinking of calling it 86/4.”
“Okay, I bite. What does 86/4 stand for?” Heidi looked up from helping her young daughter put on her coat.
“We all have the same amount of time in one day: 86,400 seconds. Like most other resources, single moms need to make these seconds count more than the average person. The name is a reminder to use time and other resources wisely, including leaving room for self-care and doing whatever God calls one to do.” Pastor Alex handed her daughter’s backpack to Heidi.
“I need a lesson in that myself. Jimmy has a ballgame this afternoon. Can we meet on Tuesday? The kids will be at their dad’s and I have the day off. I had planned to clean the apartment, do laundry, and run errands, but I could schedule it in.” Heidi knew her cleaning wouldn’t get done if she met with Pastor Alex on Tuesday, but she wasn’t about to admit that.
“Ya know, Debbie has the day off as well. I bet she’d love to help you.”
“What are you volunteering me for now?” Debbie stepped around Heidi and wiggled her finger at her husband.
“Oh, he is just trying to fanagle some of my 86,400 seconds on Tuesday by having you help me clean and do laundry.” Heidi loved watching the interaction between these friends of hers. She had never had the same level of camaraderie with Jim.
“What a great idea! I’d love to. Everytime I pray about this ministry, God puts your name in my mind. I’m sure you’re the one to lead it.”
“If I can only figure out which of my 86,400 seconds are available.” Heidi grabbed the rest of their things. “I’ll see you on Tuesday. I have to get Jimmy to his game.”
