That folks consider child’s play
An action in a skill or trade
That they’ve done day by day.
Now what’s child’s play for someone else
Just doesn’t work for me.
I couldn’t play a saxophone
Or write a symphony.
I’ve not performed a surgery.
I couldn’t if I tried.
If I’d been called to operate,
The patient would have died.
Nor could I be a seamstress who
Can sew a dress or skirt
And put together blouse and slacks
Or make a man’s dress shirt.
I’ve never thrown a touchdown pass
Nor hit a long homerun.
Athleticy I do not have
To use for work or fun.
. . . But I can make a lesson plan
And teach it to a class
And hope that when I give a test,
Then everyone will pass.
I know the right mechanics,
And editing’s a breeze,
For I can catch wrong pronoun use
And more mistakes with ease.
A study that’s my favorite,
Though many students fight it,
Is many styles of poetry—
Sometimes I try to write it.
And I can even bake a cake,
Which isn’t “grammarly,”
But it’s a skill that I’ve achieved
To please my family.
I’ve found we don’t gain expertise
By wishing that we would,
But practicing God-given gifts
To do the things we could.
