tossed aside,
adding to the collection,
blank diaries
given every birthday
since she was five. Eight in all.
Blank, but never thrown out.
The oldest, smelling of closet corners,
but never thrown out.
The mini-golden key dangled
from red ribbons in each.
Crisp white pages, trimmed in silver,
a thirsty desert, waiting for words.
On her thirteenth birthday,
she kissed her grandma’s
wrinkled cheek, smelling of
a rainy afternoon,
had to force a smile, a “thank you”
an “I love it” from her lips.
Thirteen was too old
for the flowery book and key
…her friends got gold earrings
for gifts.
On her fourteenth birthday
Her parents gave her a silver necklace;
the first year she wouldn’t get
a gift from grandma.
No “Here you go, darling”
“A special book for a special girl”
“To write your lovely secrets”
No empty pages.
No sound of the click as she locked it
forever.
She pulled the bin of diaries,
hidden under her bed
and opened each one.
Like she never had.
The first page was
blessed with her grandma’s
loopy script writing…
A verse of love,
She could hear her words sing
as softly played piano chords:
“Let love and faithfulness never leave you;
bind them around your neck,
write them on the tablet of your heart.”
Love, Grandma
She slipped the key onto her necklace
And wrote:
On my fourteenth birthday…
