I'm sure it's a witch's cat. I can feel it.
Hurrying home, she sat, trembling in the drawing room with the blinds drawn and incense filling the room with sickly sweetness. Like a fluttering bird caught in a net, her mind darted here and there distractedly. What should she do? Should she cancel her dentist appointment this afternoon? She'd heard of people fainting in the dental chair and never regaining consciousness. With bad luck, this could be her day for that. And what of the Yoga lessons this evening? She didn't want to miss those but... the black cat.
She called her friend.
Jenny entered the house and wrinkled her nose. "Whew, Rose, that incense. It's overpowering. And it's so gloomy in here." Walking to the windows she pulled up the blinds and threw open the windows. "Now, tell me what this is all about."
Feeling a little foolish, but sure of what she experienced, Rose began. "I was walking back from the shops when this black cat walked right in front of me, stopped and stared at me with green green eyes before walking on." She paused. "It was horrible, Jenny -- like it could see my soul and it was mocking me. Please don't laugh. It was scary, and now I'm afraid to do anything."
Jenny didn't laugh. She walked over to her friend and gave her a hug. "Let's talk this through. Come, sit by me on the sofa."
"Now, you believe the cat had an evil spirit which will bring you bad luck?"
"So you believe there's an invisible spirit world out there?"
Again she nodded.
"Well, if there are evil spirits, don't you think there are good spirits too -- angels and God?"
Rose was quiet for minutes. Then she turned to Jenny. "Y-e-s. I suppose that makes sense."
"Can I tell you about the God I know?" As Rose was listening, she continued. "The God I know loves you deeply. He showed His love by coming to live with us as a man, so that He could represent all mankind to His heavenly Father and take the punishment that we deserve for all that we have done wrong."
Rose shook her head. "That doesn't make sense. If there is a God who made the whole universe, why would he bother about a tiny speck like me on a tiny speck like Earth? And why suffer for us?"
Jenny looked for words. "Okay, here's a question. Out of these two kings, which do you think is the greater? The first king sits on his throne in majesty and rules his subjects from that position. They do his bidding and he sits aloof, hardly concerned about the plight of some of his subjects." She sipped her coffee. "A bit like Marie Antoinette who, when told of the peasants who had no bread, suggested they eat cake instead. The second king still rules from his throne, but every now and again, takes off his robe and crown and walks among his subjects, listening to them, seeing their struggles and playing with their children."
Rose nodded. "I think I know where you're going. The second king is greater."
"Yes, and God is the greatest that anyone can be, so He must be like the second king."
Rose was quiet for a long time. "So, He really loves me?"
"He died so that you wouldn't be punished for all you've done wrong."
"He doesn't hold anything against me?"
"The Bible says He's light and there's no darkness in Him."
"And He'll stop that black cat from bringing me bad luck?"
"We are more than conquerors through him who loves us."
"I don't need to be afraid?"
"His perfect love drives out all fear."
"But I DO feel afraid."
"Well, you need to ask Jesus to live in you. It's when He lives in you that His love will drive out the fear."
"Will you show me how to do that?"
Jenny's smile was broad. "Of course. Come, kneel beside me."

Jenny left the house with a song in her heart and a dance in her step. You are so creative in Your dealings with us, my beautiful God. Imagine using an innocent black cat to gain a new daughter.
