His friends slept nearby, unaware.
He'd asked them to pray with Him, give Him support,
But now it seemed they didn't care.
While sweat drops of blood soaked the garment He wore,
He looked heavenward as He pled,
"If there is a way to release me from this,
Please save me from what lies ahead."
The time came for Judas to point out the Lord
To soldiers who sought His arrest.
They led Him away; the disciples all fled,
Afraid to dissent or protest.
The chief priests and elders, aroused by the crowds,
Determined that Jesus should die.
"Your followers call you, 'The King of the Jews.'"
But Jesus declined to reply.
They led Him to Pilate who questioned the Lord
But announced he found no fault in Him.
Then Pilate tried vainly to quiet the crowds;
Their threats were both frightening and grim.
"I'll give you a choice, tell me who to release:
Barabbas or Jesus," he said.
"Barabbas!" they shouted, "We want him set free
And crucify Jesus instead."
So, there on the cross, Jesus suffered such pain
That only the crucified know.
The weight of the ages was thrust upon Him;
His Father decreed it be so.
It wasn't because of the physical pain
That caused Him to tremble and groan.
The Father was turning His back on His Son;
Jesus never had felt so alone.
The time came when Jesus let out His last cry
And looked to His Father above.
He gave up His spirit, His body was limp;
He died but He did it for love.
They wrapped Jesus' body in clean linen cloth;
'Twas placed in a well-guarded tomb.
But true to His word, Jesus rose from the dead
And dispelled all the darkness and gloom.
One day His disciples were standing with Him
And watched Him ascend in the air.
His work here was finished; 'twas time to go Home,
His Father would welcome Him there.
All glory to Jesus! The price has been paid.
Released from my sins, I'm now free.
I shout, "Hallelujah! All praise to my King!"
And He did it for you and for me.
