“Umm,...Ok, I guess.”
“Come away with me, my beautiful darling. You may thank me later. Wait ... what did you say?”
“I said ‘Ok, I guess.’ Look, your Majesty, let’s get a few things straight before we rush into this. Ok?”
“What could possibly need to be straightened out? I am the prince of this land. You are but a humble servant girl. You came to my ball in a breathtaking gown and these lovely glass slippers. You took my breath away during a single waltz and I was instantly smitten. I have searched the whole land for you after you. Now that I have found you, I shall marry you and make you my princess.”
“That all sounds pretty awesome; I agree. And you’re a hottie, for sure. I should probably be grateful. But this ain’t my first rodeo, so I need to be sure about a few things.”
“What in the world can you mean?”
“Well, for one thing, are you a boozer?”
“I have been known to have a moderate amount of spirits of an evening. Surely a royal gentleman is entitled to a flagon or two of mead or wine when attending festivities.”
“So you do drink. Yeah, my last boyfriend - you know: Ralph, the blacksmith? He was a drinker, too. Things got pretty intense with him sometimes and I’m not sure if I wanna go there again.”
“But, surely...”
“And, how about your Mom? What kind of relationship do you have with your Mom?”
“I am happy to say I have breakfast with the Queen every morning, and I take her to the royal fox hunt every other Saturday.”
“Oh, great. Another Mama’s boy! Ralph was a Mama’s boy. Always breaking dates because his Mom needed a lift to dialysis or something trivial like that. And you even refer to your Mom as the Queen. Yeah: I don’t think I wanna go through that again.”
“Now, see here, my dear...”
“Look, it’s better to get this stuff out in the open, dontcha think? How about going out for evenings with the boys? Are you out playing cards and shooting dice every night; because I won’t stand for that.”
“Surely, a prince’s evening activities are his own affair... but, yes: I often join my colleagues for a leisurely game of chess or a celebration of the hunt.”
“Look, I’m gonna have to think this one over. You sound too much like Ralph, and those memories are pretty fresh. Going into a new relationship is pretty hard when it feels like I’m mentally carrying the old one with me. You wanna get back to me in a few days?”
“Honestly, my dear woman. I am not Ralph, and I object to you comparing me to a mere blacksmith. Can’t you see what I am offering you?”
“Well, I can’t help it if those memories are still fresh in my mind.”
“I can’t believe you’d prefer living here in squalor as a servant to living in splendor at the palace.”
“What can I say? After all, one man’s castle can be another man -or woman’s- prison. Plus, I just joined the Scullery Maids Union so my working conditions are improving here, so …lemme think it over.”
“Ok. Well, I can’t believe I’m saying this, but this is farewell for now. I’ll head back to the palace and return next week. By then, perhaps, you will be more reasonable. Farewell, my love.”
“And that’s another thing. That palace is pretty old school. Those curtains! And all those statues! They are so last century. I mean: don’t I have any say as to where we’d live? That happened with Ralph, too; he ...”
