Then I saw them on the road. They entered the city gate. Instinctively, I knew who the men were, and hurried downstairs to greet them and offer them hospitality. Hastily, I ushered them in and shut the door. I noticed Margaret next door, eyeing me. I hoped she thought they were just two more clients.
In the living room, I had a better look. One was muscular, with long black curls that framed a face with keen, intelligent eyes, an aquiline nose and a trimmed beard around a mouth that seemed to suppress an inner excitement. The other was leaner, his body held taut as a bowstring and with eyes that darted here and there, mapping every detail of my house.
The good looking one spoke first. "You know who we are?"
"No mistaking you. That's why I invited you in. Everyone here has heard of what your God has done for you, opening the Red Sea and defeating all the tribes who opposed you."
The one with searching eyes fixed them on me. "Who else knows?"
I tried to reassure them. "You mingled with the crowd. I don't think you'd have been noticed." But I was thinking of Margaret and they saw my uncertainty, so I continued.
"You can relax here. I'll protect you. Ever since they heard of your exploits, everyone in the city is terrified and they are preparing for war against you. But not me. I don't know if you know how I make my living, but it's humiliating and demeaning. I'm an object to be used by lustful men and then discarded. No, I'm not terrified. I want your God. I want Someone who'll protect me and rescue me from this living hell." I gazed out of the window. "I dream of a husband who loves me -- where we make love -- true love and settle and raise a family. Your God loves you. Can He also love me?"
The men exchanged glances.
"Tell us everything you know about the city."
For the next three hours, I was interrogated. They were meticulous in the detail they wanted and I was eager to inform.
I had barely finished when there was loud knocking on my front door. Margaret must have sent word to the king!
"Come quickly!" I took the arm of the thin one with the searching eyes, pulling him to the stairs that led to the roof. His companion was on his heels. " Quick! Hide!" I pointed to a pile of flax I was drying, then hastened downstairs. I opened the door to four men.
"Those men you entertained. They are spies. Where are they?"
I raised my eyebrows and let my mouth fall open. " Spies? No, they were clients. I gave them what they wanted and they left." I knitted my brow. "Let me think... Yes, as it grew dark, just as the gates were closing, I saw them leave the city."
I put my hand to my mouth. "Spies? Don't let them get away. Please hurry to catch them."

I'm watching my husband, Salmon as I write this. He's kicking a ball with our little Boaz and my heart is overflowing. God's given me my heart's desire. I helped the spies escape, letting down a scarlet cord from my window in the wall of the city. Later, the Israeli God -- the one true God -- crumbled the walls of Jericho, but my little section remained intact, and I was spared by the Israelites, and joined their camp. How was I spared? Incredibly, I was saved by the scarlet cord that I left tied to my window as a sign. Scarlet must mean a lot to God. Perhaps it has something to do with the colour of a blood sacrifice. Blood saves, it seems. It can't be the blood of bulls and goats. It must be blood that is more precious to God.
One day I'll find out.
