"Ah, Jaime, you always have the wonderful ideas. Come, help me harvest these peppers. We will talk as we work."
"Of course I will help, Papa. But listen: my classmate, Ewan, has told me about a different kind of pepper. It is called Dragon's Breath, and his family in Wales knows the man who first grew it. They are hoping they can soon grow and sell it."
"And what do I care about this Dragon's Brain pepper?"
"Dragon's Breath, Papa."
"Either way, it is a foolish name, mi hijo. This is interesting news, but it is of no concern to us."
"Ah, but Papa, it could be! Surely we can learn more about them.”
"We have no need to learn of a new crop, Jaime. Our jalapeños have gained a good reputation for these many years, and I am content with them. "
"But, Papa, people today want to experience much spice in their foods, and jalapeños are not even close to being the spiciest. Ewan says the man who discovered these peppers is waiting for them to be confirmed as the hottest by the Guiness Book of World Records.”
"Our jalapeños do not need to break any records; yet they are always in demand."
"But, Papa, why should we waste our lives being less than the best?"
"Ay, mi hijo. So you think of your papa as less than the best?"
"Of course not, Papa. To me, you are the best Papa in the universe. But our peppers are just not the spiciest."
"And why should they have to be?"
"It is the way of the world. Papa"
"Jaime, this farm is my world. My own Papa came to America penniless but he worked hard. I have also worked hard, and now this farm belongs to our family. Our jalapeños and other crops provide a living for us, and our customers still demand our produce. I believe I am doing what God has called me to do. What more can a man ask?"
“I believe a man can ask to be his best, can he not?”
“Ay, mi hijo. I pray one day you will understand that to follow God’s plan for one’s life is the best way to ‘be your best.’”
“I suppose so, Papa. But I don’t think I will ever stop dreaming of what more we might do.”
“You would not be my Jaime if you did stop dreaming. But for now: less talk and more work, please. If we do not finish gathering this harvest before sundown, we will surely feel your Mama’s anger - which, as you know, can be hotter than the spiciest of peppers.”
“That is for certain, Papa.”
