“There he goes again. I’ve been telling you this pastor is too liberal. He wants us to do something for the community? Mark my words, Jack; what he really wants is for us to give more money to that homeless shelter he’s always yapping about or that help out with that home for unwed mothers. Lemme tell ya, those people brought their problems on themselves. And now they want us hardworking guys to pick up the tab? No thank you, buddy. Hmmph. That message isn’t for me.”
(Bert Lansing, plumber)

“The only time I get out of the house these days is to go to church, and I wouldn’t even be able to do that if it weren’t for the church nursery. When does he think I have time to help people in my community? I get almost no sleep because Tom’s usually away driving his truck, and I can barely even keep up with the laundry because all they do is eat and then make a mess in their diapers. Community? What’s the community ever done for me? That message doesn’t apply to me.”
(Kerri Morgan, mother of six-month old twins)

“That was really interesting. There are probably kids I know at school who have needs I haven’t even know about. I can’t think of any right now, but there probably are. But, you know… that’s why they have school counselors and nurses. I’m just a teenager. There are problems everywhere and I’ve got problems of my own. I need to study for the SATs so my parents don’t kill me, and if I don’t improve my batting average I won’t make varsity baseball. So, that message can’t be for me.”
(Miguel Lopez, high school junior)

“Well, it’s about time he preached on this. I go over to the pregnancy center every other month and I’m always the only person there from this church. They call themselves Christians but do they do anything about it, like I do? I send my old clothes to the homeless shelter. How hard would it be for them to do that, too? So I’m glad he gave this message. The rest of these people need to wake up and smell the responsibility. I’m doing my part. That message is for those other people.”
(Hannah Holmes, concerned church member)

“Oh, Father. Our pastor has shown us there are needs in our community. I know you want Your church to feed the hungry and minister to the widows and orphans. You know how tight my finances and my free time has been this month. You know my needs, and You have provided my resources. But I sense Your prompting in my heart. What would you have me do, Lord? I will do what you say; give what you ask and go where you send me. That message was surely for me.”
(Marcelline Sedona, unemployed church member)
