It was fine entertainment
To watch my little children at play.
I laughed in early days
To see them open gifts,
Their attention drawn more
To the wrapping and the ribbons
Than what was inside,
Often tossing away the gift
To play with the pretty paper.
As they got a little older,
Their patience impressed me
As they rebuilt toppling towers of blocks
Again and again and again,
A patience they did not reveal at mealtime.
Their giggles charmed me
As they blew bubbles in sunshine,
Then chased the rainbow-colored,
Fragile balls of water until
They dissipated in the air or disappeared
At a touch of grubby hands.
I was amazed by their creativity
With a cardboard box,
Which they considered just right
To sit in, stand on, stomp on,
Put upside down on top of their heads
And stagger around,
Or just fill with toys
And drag along behind them.
Their fun with a big spoon
To bang on an upside down pan
I could enjoy—for a little while.
Though it made more work for me,
I couldn’t help but be amused by their joy
At crawling inside a cupboard
Filled with pots and pans,
Which they spread around the kitchen floor.
But best of all for my pleasure,
Were the times when they became tired
And would climb into my lap
For me to read their favorite books,
Again and again and again.
