In the strength of boastful pride;
He little knew what lay ahead—
Before a girl, bravado fled,
The boast of flesh three times denied.
The others also fled in fear
And left the Saviour on His own;
Their love, they thought so strong, sincere
Would falter, crumble, disappear—
In terror’s face their Friend disown.
But Christ did not abandon man
But persevered unto the cross
Fulfilled His Father’s perfect plan,
Completed what God’s love began,
Laid down His life for them and us.
So what of us? Would we flee too?
Or do we think that we would stand?
If pressured would our faith fall through?—
Remember Peter thought he knew—
In face of fear, found out firsthand.
At Pentecost the Spirit came,
The church of Jesus Christ was birthed,
Empowered by Him with hearts aflame
Went far and wide to truth proclaim—
By Spirit’s power upturned the earth.
The Spirit’s power’s our greatest need;
There’s nought in man of which to brag,
No worth in ritual or creed
Nor can we work a righteous deed—
Each righteous deed’s a filthy rag.
But God be praised, believers may
All know the Spirit’s pow’r within;
It is God’s gift, so day by day
In word and deed we walk the Way
And shine the Light of Life to men.
