Suddenly, the door bell sounded, and jarred me from my moment. The Beethoven melody sounded throughout the house, and I giggled. How clever to put a classical piece in a doorbell. The ladies will love it.
“Marjorie, hello! Please come in,†with a wide smile, I greeted my first guest in my new house, as I swung the door open.
“Linda, you look beautiful.†Marjorie scuffled into the marble entry leaning on her cane. She glanced around. “Your home is magnificent.â€
I smiled, and nodded. “We do our best.â€
“You must have the brand “perfectionist†sewn onto you.†She winked and entered my living room where I had set out my silver tea service, along with Grandmother’s English china.
“Please sit down while we wait for the other ladies. Would you like a cup of tea?†I sank into my Bergere French armchair, and poured the hot liquid into a delicate cup, as she slowly lowered herself onto the sofa. As she placed her handbag on the floor beside her, I noticed a small New Testament tucked in the side pocket. I wonder where my Bible is.
“This is a lovely sofa. I haven’t seen this style before.†She ran her hand across the rose patterned upholstery.
“You probably haven’t. We love this French brand of furniture, and had it imported.†I handed her the tea and smiled.
Marjorie watched me as she took the cup.
Beethoven’s symphony sounded again, and I stood to greet my additional two guests.
We assembled in the dining room, and I directed each lady to her seat while pointing out the place cards I had made from silk paper.
Once they were settled, I announced, “I have created a lovely English tea for you. We will be partaking of cucumber-mint and watercress open face sandwiches. For dessert, we will have delicious raisin scones, topped with lemon curd. I also have various teas for you to choose from; lemon, peach and ginger.†I grinned and passed the delicate sandwiches to them.
The ladies conversed quietly among themselves as they took small bites of my works of art. When I took a small sip of tea, I noticed Janine softly nudge Patricia. A look and a wink were exchanged. I felt my face flush.
“Is something the matter Janine?†I swallowed and peered at her.
“Oh no, Linda, everything is beautiful. But, I’m sorry; I have to be going now. “Janine stood, and then Patricia followed.
“I must go too,†explained Patricia turning her face away. “Everything is so . . . wonderful.â€
They clutched their handbags and scurried toward the front door. I followed while biting my lip.
“I’m sorry you have to leave so soon. Perhaps next time you can stay longer.â€
The ladies waved and hurried toward their cars.
I watched them drive away, then turned back to look at Marjorie. She sat at the table, gazing at me.
I returned to the dining room, and slowly I lowered myself into my chair.
“I’m so glad you’re still here Marjorie.†I smiled at her, took a bite of scone, and launched into a coughing fit.
“Are you all right, dear?†asked Marjorie.
“Yes.†I answered while clearing my throat. I looked down as my face grew hot. “Well, I’m not sure.â€
“What is it?â€
“I don’t understand why they left so soon.†I choked out.
Marjorie stared at her plate, and then looked at me. “Perhaps they had something to do.â€
I turned my head and studied her.
“Some people are not quite so perfect,†she smiled then took a sip of tea.
My chin trembled, and I swallowed. “I was hoping to make some new friends.â€
“Yes dear, but most often people just want to know you.†She squeezed my hand and stood. “I must be going too. A sewing project is calling me.†She laughed as she hobbled toward the door.
I followed behind her, but before she left, she turned. “I will pray for you Linda.â€
I closed the door and leaned against it. Where is that Bible anyway?
