He gripped his knees and clenched his teeth and stared ahead, stiff as a board, not knowing what this roller coaster ride had in store for him. He felt boxed in, as if he sat in one of those mini cars, but with no windows or doors. That’s how he felt in his life, anyway, boxed in.
Brett moved slowly at first, and as he adjusted, he looked around. Down yonder, he spotted a pinprick of light. “I must be headed there,†he thought.
A breeze brushed cool against him, though it didn’t make him cold. He jerked, as if his car hit a bump or another link of chain, and his speed increased. He looked around at the cause of it, but couldn’t see anything. Nothing except that teeny light.
“Ha,†he thought. “Just like my life. Nothing but bumps.†He didn’t know this was going to turn out to be a morose trip down memory lane.
Brett looked at the light. It had grown slightly. He squinted his eyes and tilted his head, like a dog when it hears a strange sound. For sure, it had gotten bigger.
Another jolt pushed Brett backwards. He tightened his grip on his knees. The wind blew briskly on his face. The light looked to be about the size of a quarter now, way off in the distance.
His speed increased and increased. Brett felt like he was traveling a hundred miles an hour, and he headed straight for the light. “At least I am finally headed somewhere,†he said to himself. His life was nothing but a big rut going around and around but never getting anywhere.
Faster and faster he went. Now Brett was concerned. He shook with the jarring motion. The light grew to the size of a watermelon. It transfixed him. He could not tear his eyes away.
He sped along even faster. His nails dug into his legs. He opened his mouth to scream. Faster and faster he went. The light loomed massive in front of him. “What is that?†he thought, terrified.
“Help,†he cried. His speed increased even more, if that were possibly. “Help me. Help me!†he yelled.
Now there was nothing but the light. It mesmerized him. He lost all sensibility, except for the light. His heart beat so fast. He could not stand it.
He traveled impossibly fast. So fast he felt as if he floated through outer space. Then, he saw it. More like, he felt it. Or, felt someone. The light blinded him, but he sensed someone rising before him. He wanted to fall flat on his face, but could not move, as if he was dead.
Brett sensed an arm. It rose slowly and pointed off to the side. A moment followed when time seemed to stand still. Then the person spoke. His voice penetrated Brett’s inner being. It made him burst out crying. It filled him with terror. It overwhelmed him with so much love he thought he would explode. The voice filled him and everything around him. The Person said with slow deliberation and authority, “Follow Me!â€
Brett’s eyes fluttered open. People talked animatedly and buzzed about sifting through the rubble. Someone nearby yelled, “Over here!†At once, several people surrounded Brett. They pulled on his arms and legs and placed him on a stretcher. One man who carried the stretcher said, “Hey, buddy. We have you now. You startled me, though. I had just checked you, and you were gone. It’s amazing anyone survived this earthquake!â€
Brett thought back to the person, and His command, “Follow Me.†His heart filled with peace, and even joy. He hadn’t experienced those feelings in a long time, but He had been given a second chance, and he would follow Him, no matter what.
