Bea sat up straight in her seat at the end of the conference table.
“This is an important issue we’re voting on today. We’re looking to expand our praise and worship team and bring on board some truly anointed women and men of God to join us.”
Sarah stood up abruptly, “But, this will put limits on what we do, sing or perform…I’m not in favor of this at all.” At that moment a loud sound rang through the conference room, sort of like a sputtering and then a long drawn out hiss.
“My gosh! What was that?” Bea looked around the room.
Sarah continued, “I don’t know, nor do I care at this moment. I’m really upset about the thought of others coming on board and spoiling our praise and worship team. I enjoy mixtures of contemporary and hymns…I don’t want to ask permission to perform. I think this is a poor idea Bea. I’m sorry, it just is. Doesn’t
anyone else have something to say about this?”
The board laughed this time at hearing the “rude” sounds.
Bea looked at Sarah and said, “I hear what you’re saying Sarah, but you’re one person. We need to hear from others. You came on board here last year and we think you’ve done a fine job, but we want to expand and bring other gifted musicians and singers on board.”
Sarah looked at Bea and scrunched her face before replying, “What for? I’m sorry to be arbitrary…but who decided this is best? Did God lead you to this? Or was it the enemy?”
“This is beyond weird.” Bea said. “Where is this sound coming from? It’s almost as if each time Sarah speaks she’s getting hissed at.”
The meeting dragged on for about twenty-five more minutes. Sarah’s objections continued as did the hissing and sputtering. It didn’t happen until five minutes before the close of the meeting that a divine intervention seemed to have taken place.
“Well, I think that we will have to table this entire concept until the next meeting as we’re running late. I think we need to go home and pray about this hoping there’ll be an answer from above. I’m looking around the table and everyone seems to be fizzling out from this discussion. So, unless there is another voice to say we should go forward without any doubt….”
And then it happened…the sputter—sputter—hiss—hiss turned into a melodious composition of harps and angelic voices.
“Hallelujah, Hallelujah…For thou Lord are a shield to me, my glory and my lifter of my head…”
The answer was clear that day. The board voted unanimously to bring additional members to the team.
The sputtering and hissing sounds? Some say it was from the furnace room, although it never happened before that day or since.
The singing? It was the additional members we brought on…so the voice of God…gave us ears to hear.
Sarah has never been hissed again.
