For a moment her mind wandered idly. Should she tell him tonight? If he was serious about her it would be better to tell him early on in the relationship, so they could work things out together before…
Just then he entered the door, glanced around the room, then seeing her he headed for her table. She looked approvingly at his six-four frame, raven black hair and those blue eyes that always seemed to tease her.
“Sorry about being a few minutes late,” he said, “our crew had to wait for the team to get back from Galaxy Six before we could leave. Their craft’s electronics played up a bit, causing a delay.”
“These things happen,” she said. “Are you still on the team to go to Gamma Andromeda next month?”
“Yes, in fact they told me today that I'm leading the expedition, which brings me to a very important question—have you thought again about coming with me, as my exclusive travelling partner?”
“We need to talk.”
“Sounds ominous; what’s on your mind?”
“It’s to do with the purpose of the mission.”
“We all know that the purpose is to set up a colony and ‘like types’ then reproduce.”
“Why did you select me as your partner?”
“Because you’re cute, intelligent, cute, good company—and did I say cute?”
“There’s a problem.”
“There’s always a problem; I’m good at solving problems. Back at the base they call me Mr. Fix-It.”
“Let’s be serious for a while. Have you heard of Project Copycat?”
“You mean that one headed up by that Japanese professor?”
“Yes, that one.” She sat back and looked at him intently.
“What of it?” he returned her gaze, a feint smile on his face.
“You don’t really know me, do you?” she said. “What’s my favorite food?”
“Whenever we go out you hardly eat a thing, so it’s hard to tell.”
“Have you ever heard me complain about being hungry?”
“What about my figure; do you approve?”
“Wow, and how I approve—you’re amazing. But I’m curious; and a bit worried. Where are you going with all this, and what is it that you want to tell me?”
“I guess I should have told you long ago. Project Copycat is about cloning humans; making robots that look and act like humans. I’m on that program.”
“So have you made any lifelike robots recently?”
She leaned forward, took both his hands in hers, looked him in the eyes and said, “I am a robot, albeit one that mimics human behavior perfectly in most ways. You and I are not ‘like types’ and I cannot be your partner; I can’t mate with you. I’m sorry, I should have told you long ago, but I didn’t know what you were planning.”
His brow furrowed and she noticed his left ear twitched nervously.
A very human response, she thought to herself. I hope he’s not going to over react, as humans often do. “So, where do we go from here?” she asked.
“Suddenly I’m not hungry anymore,” he said slowly, “and I guess you never get hungry, apart from needing your batteries charged from time to time. Let’s go to my transport vehicle; I’ll take you home.”
Once in the vehicle he just sat and looked at her.
“Why aren’t we leaving? It’s a bit weird having you staring at me like that. Then she noticed the sparkle was back in his blue eyes, as a massive grin creased his handsome face.
“And now?” she asked.
“I’m getting hungry,” he said, removing a coiled cord from beneath the vehicle’s dashboard. “Do you mind if I have a quick snack?” With that he raised his right arm slightly, and stuck the end of the cord under his armpit.
“There’s another cord in the cubbyhole, if you’re a bit peckish.” His grin widened as her jaw dropped.
“You mean you are also…”
“Precisely. Professor Hiromoto chose us to be together on Gamma Andromeda. Are you now willing to be my travelling partner?”
She reached over and punched his arm playfully. “Sure thing—but you mess me around like that again and I’ll give you a short-circuit between the eyes, Mr. Fix-It.”
They enjoyed a twelve volt snack together—medium rare.
