Our bags are packed and our spirits are high. It's going to be a marvelous trip. Four humans and us, all sandwiched like sardines, traveling from Delaware to Kentucky to celebrate my favorite season. Christmas!
No holiday evokes more warm feelings in our line of work than this one. Late nights, tired babies, globs of sugar, all the kisses and hugs . . . Oh, it makes me weepy just thinking about it!
“Hey, Flo, it's time to go.”
“I'm here already, B. You forget, we travel light and swift,” I answer, a slight squeak of anticipation in my voice.
ACHOO!!
“Did you here that? It's already started and we're just under way. This is fabulous! By the time we get to the relatives, we should have infected all four. And guess what will happen when we get there?”
“Stan, you're not coming down with something, are you?” I hear the tall, dark-haired female asked.
“Of course not. It's just allergies. I always have them this time of year.”
“Ah, yes. Here comes the handkerchief. Things are going ahead of schedule. We fly north, south, east and west. Low cost air fare, and no charge for luggage.”
“Ha, ha! That's a good one, Flo, real good. No cost . . . ha!” Laughter tumbles from B like an overflowing toilet bowl.
It feels like no time has passed before we arrive at the next victims' residence. We're chomping at the bit. Stan's eyes are itching, his chest crackling, and two of the other humans have sore throats. Sweet! What a party!
Throughout the evening we spread the cheer like nobody's business. What was that? Oh, I've got to go tell B. We're going to Maine. In a car. With the Kentucky family. This is so too good to be true. B and I give each other a high five.

Two days later – We are aboard a comfortable truck with a mom, dad, and five-year-old, all newly infected but completely unsuspecting, and we're heading to Maine.
“B, didn't you always want to go to Maine?”
“Yep! This will truly be a highlight for me. I relish the thought of all those Mainers, in the midst of a cold and cruel winter, all gathering together for New Years. I heard 'em say they haven't been up to visit their family in years. That means a serious party.”
And so it is. Everything we've ever dreamed of! In fact, this morning, our Kentucky family is so sick they can't even get up from bed.
“Flo, Flo, did you just here that? The old geezer said that family gathered here last night from Maine, Massachusetts, Pennsylvania, and Texas.”
Tears of joy stream down B's face. We've hit pay dirt. We are so fruitful and have multiplied beyond our wildest dreams! They will write songs about us! I give B a tissue.
“I bet we're gonna be on the news tonight, dude!” I squeal.
“Come on, let's head next door with the neighbors. We're invincible!”

“Flo, what are they doing? Why are they holding hands like that and praying?”
“I . . . don't know. But I don't like it.”
“In Jesus name, we command this virus to be gone for good. You have no authority here. We pray for healing to fill our home and hearts. We thank you, Lord, that you watch over us, and you are the Great Physician. Amen.”
“Flo . . . Flo, what is happening? I don't feel so good. I feel sick.”
“Me too, B. Me . . . too. I'm afraid this is the end of the . . . road.”
