But all it brought was great dismay
For he loved riches more than all
And so he turned and walked away—
The love of wealth led him astray.
Short Zacchaeus couldn’t see
So swamped by the surrounding horde,
Climbed high into a lofty tree
He so desired to see the Lord—
His enterprise brought great reward.
Beneath the tree the Saviour stopped;
He called Zacchaeus to come down
And though self-righteous people mocked
He made it clear to all around
Another lost sheep had been found.
A blind man sitting by the way
Perceives a great approaching mass;
“Who passes by”, he’s heard to say;
They tell him Christ’s about to pass—
His chance to see has come at last.
‘Son of David,’ he calls out;
As mercy from the Saviour pleads
And though the mob rebukes his shout
In his persistent faith succeeds—
Christ opens eyes—The blind now sees.
