Was billed to fill a lust for knowledge they had been denied.
Instead, the whirlpool of passions sucked them in to sin,
Desires raging, always waging war right from within.
And thus the battle's blazed and burned through lives in all the days
Of history. It's harmed humanity in countless ways,
Enslaving us with cravings, squand'ring savings on desires
That never quench our inner emptiness, just fuel its fires.
The emptiness inside us, though, cannot be satisfied
Until we lay upon God's altar all our lust and pride,
Surrendering to Jesus' sacrifice on Calvary,
Which grants the grace to grow the Spirit's fruit in you and me.
As in His Word we learn the life by which He's glorified,
Our sins disgust us, loathe our lusts as we are sanctified.
Though sometimes change comes quickly, it can often be quite slow,
As growth goes step by step while we our Savior get to know.
Because He loved us first, we grow the fruit of love and grace,
And soon the sweetness of His joy no sorrow can erase.
No fear can sap the savor of His all-abiding peace,
And trials may seem sour, but our patience they increase.
As selfishness surrenders to compassion, kindness shows,
And rotten schemes uprooted, then a crop of goodness grows.
The tartness of betrayal cedes to fruit of faithfulness.
Humility will grow the tender yield of gentleness.
Then last, encompassing them all, temptations enemy,
The fruit of self-control the most elusive seems to be.
Once justified in Jesus, Satan can't consume a soul,
But revels when we fail to flourish fruit of self-control.
Galatians 5:22-3 NIV
