She grew to old age in a time when people walked in darkness. They didn't just have periods in their lives where the light was hard to see, but all they could remember was darkness. All their parents and grandparents and on for generations could remember was darkness. To put it in perspective, take a minute and think about how much you know about the 1600s. We, of course, have no personal memories and are dependent on history to tell us the truth. But, consider this, what would our spiritual lives be like if the Holy Spirit had not been given to us and no word had been received from God since the 17th century?
The daughter of Phanuel, of the tribe of Asher, she lived in the temple, serving God with fasting and prayer both night and day. Jacob's blessing to her tribe promised rich food and delicacies fit to share with royalty (Genesis 49:20 NET). It is appropriate, then, that she gave her life with all its riches to God.
One day, while performing her duties in the temple, she heard these ecstatically spoken words:

... mine eyes have seen thy salvation, Which thou hast prepared before the face of all people; A light to lighten the Gentiles, and the glory of thy people Israel. ...Behold, this child is set for the fall and rising again of many in Israel; and for a sign which shall be spoken against; ...that the thoughts of many hearts may be revealed (Luke 2:29-35 KJV).
Looking up, she saw a young couple who had brought their son to present him to the Lord. The words she had heard were Simeon's response to the baby. Joining them, she gave thanks to God for the birth of the one who would deliver them from darkness.
Immediately, she began to proclaim his birth and prophecy his deliverance to all who looked for redemption in Israel. The prophecy of Isaiah had finally come true:

The people that walked in darkness have seen a great light: they that dwell in the land of the shadow of death, upon them hath the light shined. (Isaiah 9:2 KJV)
