Poor Mary was confused and frantic.
“But Mary remained standing outside the tomb sobbing. As she wept, she stooped down [and looked] into the tomb. And she saw two angels in white sitting there, one at the head and one at the feet, where the body of Jesus had lain. And they said to her, ‘Woman, why are you sobbing?’ She told them, ‘Because they have taken away my Lord, and I do not know where they have laid Him (John 20:11-13 Amplified Bible).”
Heart racing, in terror and bewilderment, she turns away.
“On saying this, she turned around and saw Jesus standing [there], but she did not know (recognize) that it was Jesus. Jesus said to her, ‘Woman, why are you crying [so]? For Whom are you looking?’ Supposing that it was the gardener, she replied, ‘Sir, if you carried him away from here, tell me where you have put Him and I will take him away (John 20:14-15 Amplified Bible).”
Wide eyed, barely able to breathe, with a sense of hopelessness she pondered….
Where have they taken my Lord?
“Jesus said to her, ‘Mary!” Turning around she said to Him in Hebrew, ‘Rabboni!’—which means Teacher or Master (John 20:16 Amplified Bible).”
Recognizing the voice of her Lord, as He called her name, Mary was no longer at her wits end. He had removed all fear, sorrow and despair. No longer did she question the whereabouts of Jesus. He had chosen her, a lowly woman, as first to witness Him after His resurrection!
“Jesus said to her, ‘Do not cling to Me [do not hold Me], for I have not yet ascended to the Father. But go to My brethren and tell them, I am ascending to My Father and your Father, and to My God and your God.’ Away came Mary Magdalene, bringing the disciples news (word) that she had seen the Lord and that He had said these things to her (John 20:18 Amplified Bible).”
Experiencing the unexpected, Mary had erroneously perceived someone had snatched Jesus body or changed His resting place. In reality, Jesus exited the tomb of His own volition. Before returning to His Father in heaven, He gave his disciples a mission. He is still sending out his followers.
“Jesus approached and, breaking the silence, said to them, ‘All authority (all power of rule) in heaven and on earth has been given to Me. Go then and make disciples of all the nations, baptizing them into the name of the Father and of the Son and Holy Spirit, Teaching them to observe everything that I have commanded you, and behold, I am with you all the days (perpetually, uniformly, and on every occasion), to the [very] close and consummation of the age. Amen (so let it be). ”
