clouds of organic shape
chase each other as
sunlight bursts through in slivers
And waves at me.
The world spins faster
or is it my head?
Or both colliding?
I am frozen to the grass,
the dewy bed I made last night;
it had to be here
since my feet failed to move.
All went black at that moment,
and the same spot is where I wake.
Water droplets bead on my cheek—
so this is what it feels like
to be bathed in morning dew.
The scent of tobacco lingers on
my damp clothes, cloaking the
fresh morning air.
Flashes of light block my cloud-watching;
a cacophony of clicks and laughter,
even a nuthatch chuckles.
is all I can say.
What will my family say?
Uncle, Duke of York:
To the royal family.”
I will know tomorrow
as the paparazzi plasters photos,
headlines above my face:
“The Royal Blunder”
“A Prodigal Prince”
“The Black Sheep of Buckingham”
Shan’t be a pleasant tea tomorrow.
From the cradle,
called to be a king.
Oh, the pressure…
my birth determined my future,
a life of wealth to squander.
A country’s eye follows me,
not a mistake to be missed.
I couldn’t help who my
any more than they could control
the son they’d acquire.
I’m not the first
to tumble into a lake
in trousers and tie;
to visit a pub and party
more than I ought;
to punch some bloke
over a girl…
but the black sheep
in line for the throne
As I stand and wring the moisture
from my shirt,
the spinning reaches my stomach
and I do believe I might grow up now.
When headlines reach
the royal hands, while sipping tea,
before I am chastised,
I will remind my loved ones that
they too would be considered
black sheep in God’s Royal Kingdom,
if not for the Lord’s forgiveness…
worded more properly for the Queen,
It is a new day in Buckingham.
