How strange the taste.
Unfathomable, puzzling, unknown,
Beyond all past experience of chase,
A texture, flavour I can’t name or own.
(Based on the Book of Jonah)
How strange this taste.
Unlike the salty tang of marine host,
Unlike the shoals that swim th’aquatic coast,
Unlike the savoury diet I treasure most,
How strange that whilst
The night-time world did sleep
I raced my own dark world
Through fathoms deep,
To rise through swirling storm
At the directing word
Of pinpoint navigation
By the still small voice I heard,
Bidden in time, in circumstance exact,
Bidden to swallow, not my savoury meal,
Of creatures from the deep, the salty snack,
Instead, obey and heed His plan revealed.
How strange that one should flee
And run and sail
Seeking to hide, escape, evade from He
Whose kind o’er-seeing eye will never fail
How strange to carry
Deep within my cavernous vast frame
One of a strange unfathomable taste
One who now cries in prayer to His great Name.
Like embryonic treasure deep within
I guard the company with which I’m graced
And keep in safety for our God, the form
I cannot taste.
When God commands, I leave upon the shore
The one I’d carried safe for three long days
Then watch him sink upon his knees at last,
Yielding with tears in deep repentant praise.
If only I could speak, I’d share the joy
Of what it means to follow and obey,
But he has learnt; its time that I move on
Upon my way.
I dip, I swim, into the ocean deeps
Once more I feast the salty savoury range.
