“Are you upset about something Shelly?”
“Yes Mom, I am!” Shelly let out a loud sigh, “Why do you always have to be an embarrassment to me!”
“I have no idea what you’re talking about, Shelly. What did I do?”
“All that God stuff—you always have to find a way to preach to my friends! Why can’t you just be a normal mom and talk normal stuff?”
“Shelly, your friend Misty seemed very depressed. She needed to hear what I told her about God loving her.”
"Mom, you seem to have some church-type comment for everything my friends say. 'God is the answer,' 'Praise God' for this or that, or something always reminds you of a Bible verse."
“Shelly, I can’t separate my relationship with God from who I am. Those things just flow forth, without me even thinking about it. That’s the way it is when you’re a Christian and the love of God is within you.”
“Get real Mom! Cindy’s mom says she’s a Christian, and she never says stuff like that. She just talks normal girl stuff with us. You’re the only embarrassing fanatic. Why don’t you just stop it? My friends don’t come over here to get preached to!”
“Shelly, if you know you have the answers for life, you need to share them and Jesus—
“Oh just STOP—that’s your answer for everything! No wonder Dad left us. He probably got sick of you embarrassing him all the time too since you got on this religious kick. I need to just go live with him. I’m totally sick of it!”
“Please Shelly, just try and listen to me—
Shelly cut the words off by slamming her bedroom door.
Sharron sat, heartsick since her daughter left to live with her dad. She felt she had failed not only her daughter, but God. She had hoped her witness would lead her daughter to follow and accept Christ…but somehow it had gone all wrong—
Her thoughts were interrupted by a knock on the door.
“Hello, Ms Williams.”
“Well, hello Misty—Shelly isn’t here—actually she’s —”
“Living with her dad—I know—I’m sorry that happened. Actually though, Ms Williams, it’s you I came to see. I’ve been thinking so much about what you said, and well—could you help me ask God into my heart, like He's in yours?”
“Oh Misty,” she said with tears in her eyes, pulling her in and hugging her.
“You know, Ms Williams, Shelly apologized to me for you saying that stuff to me. She said she knew it embarrassed me. I told her it didn’t, but she wouldn’t listen…”
“That’s okay Misty, I confess I don’t understand how my own child can be so ashamed of me and turn her back on me and God, but I have put in it all in God’s hands. I was just writing Shelly a letter—I’ll get back to that later. Right now, I’m just so happy you’ve decided to give your heart and life to God! Come on, let’s pray together.”
Shelly ran into her mom’s house screaming for her. She just had to be here. Her car was here. Surely she couldn’t be one of those people that disappeared. That rapture stuff just couldn’t be true. She frantically searched, shrieking, “Mom, PLEASE be here! I do love you! I’m so sorry!”
When her mother wasn’t there, she just knew! She fell onto the sofa in tears. Her eyes fell on a backpack and a jacket she knew belonged to her friend Misty. Misty’s mother had called her—Misty was missing too. She began to feel terror like she’d never known. Suddenly her eyes fell on a letter addressed to her, lying next to her mother’s open Bible. She picked it up with trembling hands…
I love you so much. I never meant to be an embarrassment to you. But you must understand I could never be ashamed to tell of Jesus. The scripture says in Luke: 9:26 “For whoever shall be ashamed of me and of my words, of him shall the Son of man be ashamed, when he shall come in his own glory, and in his Father's, and of the holy angels.” Shelly that is Jesus’ own words and
Shelly sat paralyzed, reading, over and over the words of the unfinished letter.
