alone, so all alone,
down a shadowed lane, I walked,
through the ghostly maples,
now nearly naked in this November night,
the leaves now gone away
to their graves now ‘neath my feet,
a soft, soft carpet of glories past,
to nourish earth in this their last,
and I wondered as I wandered,
down this fateful, fretful path.

alone, so all alone,
down a shadowed lane, I walked,
breathing in the mist of moonlit air,
a haunting mist, weighing ever heavy, old and tired,
a beckoning to slow my pace,
to come to some deep, darkening place,
where days are ended in their softening sighs,
where does close that black velvet curtain,
where all the worries fade away,
where this slowing stroll, no more.

alone, so all alone,
down a shadowed lane, I walked,
as if ushered by some solemn, silent soul
to a place I must not go, though I did want it so,
to reach this peace that lays deep within the winter snow,
the steps have stopped,
I pause to let the still, still quiet gird my soul,
a final thought,
a final word,
a final prayer.

alone, so all alone,
at the end of a shadowed lane I sat,
and then did wait, a holy wait,
for some sad, reluctant reason,
to gaze upon the starlit field,
a barley field, now empty,
and to my eyes,
I did behold,
five angels descend to play,
to dance amongst the harvest straw,
in airy footsteps upon the pearly, ivory hay,
the mist became as sparkling jewels,
fireflies in a whirl,
the somber, somber silence
gave way as fiddlers rose up to play,
as if katydids and crickets, just had to have their say,
spellbound I was,
to say the least, by this jamboree of joy,
as the angels laughed,
and the angels smiled,
and one even winked at me.

I lived to tell this moonlight tale,
for I journeyed home that night,
down a star-filled path, now filled with hope,
and not alone, no more.




AUTHOR’S NOTE: This miraculous night actually happened to me, the night I considered ending it all and slipping beneath the winter snow. By the grace of God, I came home.
