At least that’s what my diary said,
And so, to start this ‘normal’ day
I spent an extra hour in bed.
‘Is that the neighbours?’ queried I
‘Making a rare and early start?’
But crash and bang and shout and cry
Just didn’t seem to fit the part.
I staggered slowly ‘cross the room
And pulled the curtains back some more
And in the early morning gloom
Considered what I thought I saw.
‘D’you think the kids sleep peacefully?’
I asked my husband’s dozing form.
‘I think you should get up and see
Why our best table’s on the lawn.’
With sleepy stare we watched, and lo
Out came our busy offspring three,
Fetching and carrying, to and fro,
Whilst giggling loud and merrily.
‘They’re my old curtains’ I did shout
Your fishing kit, our old TV,
But when we saw a bed go out
We quickly shot downstairs to see.
The giggles changed to sheepish looks
‘We thought we’d give you a surprise
And tidy up our junk and books,
(And make some money on the side.’)
We’ve put a note through every door
It says ‘Come Round and Buy Our Loot,
There’s Bargains better than the Store -
A Car Boot Sale, without the Boot.’
No sooner had we read the note
And gasped at what our three had planned,
Doors opened up and down the street
And neighbours came with note in hand.
They seemed so pleased to come and buy
Our cast-off goods though old and worn,
And no-one wished to hurry home
But stood and talked on the front lawn.
The childish notes in coloured pen
Had entered many-a lonely place,
And young and old, women and men,
Had come together face to face
New friends were made that Saturday
The Car Boot Sale – without the Boot –
Was a success in many-a way
And bore some long and lasting fruit.
Next time a ‘normal’ Saturday
Is forecast in the months ahead
I’ll lock the door, and hide away
And spend the whole day in my bed.
