His entrapment— the Pharisees’ aim;
For no matter how Jesus might answer
They felt sure He’d be open to blame.
To say yes He would anger the people
Who despised Rome’s oppressive regime;
To say no could be classed as sedition—
So no answer could please it would seem!
But they miscalculated His wisdom;
He discerned all their evil design
When He asked who the penny depicted,
Said ‘twas Caesar’s proud face on the coin.
“Give to Caesar whatever is Caesar’s,
Give to God all the things that are His;”
“Who’s your Lord?”is implied in the answer—
For the image you wear says who is.
Man makes much of his outward appearance
But our God is concerned with the heart—
Made to shine the Creator’s likeness—
It’s our spirit that sets us apart.
Pharisees were convinced they were righteous
By their seeming conformance to Law—
Though the cup on the outside looked perfect,
Hidden inward corruption He saw.
The Lord Jesus then posed them a question—
How the Christ could be David’s own son,
Yet in Spirit he called Him his Lord?”—
They knew not, He Who spoke was the One.
There are many false notions of Jesus—
Who He is, is man’s foremost concern—
All we need for instruction, He’s told us—
Search the Scriptures! Be watchful! Discern!
