His gaze upon the town
He waits to see a shower of fire
Of burning rocks fall down
He knows, of course, his Master’s mind
The chance that He’d relent
When knees were bowed, and tears were shed
When hardened hearts repent
He builds a shelter from the sun
And sits within its shade
When nothing happens to the town
He feels himself betrayed
He drags his anger like a cloak
Around his wiry form
And stirs the thoughts inside his head -
A swirling, seething storm
The Lord provides a tender vine
To shield his angry child
Jonah strokes its fragile leaves
With happiness he smiles
But God creates a tiny worm
So miniscule, so small
That slowly eats the new-born vine
Till nothing’s left at all
The sun beats down relentlessly
Upon poor Jonah’s head
He mourns the passing of the vine
And wishes he were dead
God’s gentle voice, his reprimand
That Jonah did not see
“The hundred thousand souls down there
They matter much to me!
The vine, for just a passing day
Was here, and then no more
But each and every person’s life -
On them, My love I pour.”
