They politely left their half-hearted conversations and made their way to each other. Kevin grabbed hold of Anna’s hands possessively. “Niagara Falls, my dear?”
She batted her eyes and stood on tip-toe to brush a shy kiss across his lips. Soon, the couple locked arms and fled out the door as bubbles floated through the air. Kevin opened the Camaro door and Anna crawled in, tucking her wedding dress up under her.
“To the hotel, Anna-Love.” Kevin picked up speed as tins cans trailed behind them and the rest will forever be remembered by the two of them and no one else; that first married night of wedded bliss for Mr. and Mrs. Kevin Langstrom.
And then they woke up…
“Kevin?” Anna called from the shower. “Can you bring my clothes, please?”
“You can come get them, we’re married now, you know,” Kevin teased.
“Ummm… I don’t think so.”
Kevin picked up the stack of clothes and laid them on the counter but then her panties caught his attention. “Anna, you wear pink underwear?”
She drew back the curtain a bit, “Get out, Kevin!”
Settled back into the car, the drive was a quiet one as Anna struggled with being the blushing bride. “How long will it take to get to Niagara Falls, Kevie?”
‘Kevie’, still peeved at his shy wife, told her, “Look at the directions, dear.”
Anna studied the papers. “Ten hours. That’s not so bad. We can do this, right? Have you ever driven this far?”
Kevin was aggravated. “Why don’t you take a nap or something?”
They sat in silence for hours as they sped past the flat countryside. And then rain pelted the t-tops making for a very loud trip.
“Kev, you okay? You look kind of greenish.” She touched his forehead.
“Maybe we should stop for the day?”
When Kevin started to squirm, he exited the interstate and pulled into the first hotel he found. He jumped out of the car, just barely getting it in park. Anna wondered what he was up to until she saw him run to the bushes. There he lost his free hotel breakfast waffles and his dollar menu lunch.
The second night of wedded bliss was now in play. Nothing to keep secret this time. Absolutely nothing.
Off early the next morning, both were a bit cheerier. “We’ll be there by noon, Anna. You excited?”
“Yes. This is the dream honeymoon – going to Niagara Falls. I’ve never crossed into another country before.”
Kevin smiled smugly, happy God made him into such a good husband.
Later, Anna called out above the radio, “Look – a sign for the Falls. Kevin, we’re really going.”
Kevin continued to smile. He felt very secure in his new role as leader of the family. “Navigator, we need to start watching the directions closer.”
“We want Rainbow Bridge. Turn left on Rainbow Blvd. Slight right, Honey. What’s a slight right?”
Kevin, busy with traffic, didn’t listen to her constant babble. Sweat dripped from his forehead into his eyes.
They were finally at the border, just a car away from Kevin making Anna’s dream come true. Anna went through their paperwork to prepare for her first border crossing. Soon she began to panic. “Hon, where’s the folder that had our passports in it?”
“In my bedroom in the top...” his face blanched.
The man called out, “Passports, please.”
“Sir,” Kevin’s voice squeaked. “I left the passports on my dresser, in Illinois.”
“Sorry. You can see the Falls on the U.S. side.”
“Sir,” Kevin whispered, “we’re just married. I can’t believe I messed up so fast. Can’t you please let us cross?”
Kevin pulled the car out of the long line. “I am so stupid.”
Anna’s eyes were big and teary at that declaration. “No, you’re not stupid.”
Kevin parked on the U.S. side of the Falls and they stood, hand-in-hand.
“Breathe, Baby,” Anna whispered. That’s Canadian air.”
Kevin stared at his wife as she looked out over the falls into the foreign country. “I think we just might make it, Anna.”
Anna kissed him passionately, there in front of everyone. “Oh yes, we will most definitely make it.”
