This is a very sweet story. It also brings back memories of Christmases past.
This is a great entry for putting me in the Christmas spirit with memories. Your "little girl" voice is exactly right. I loved the Christmas tree she "drew" on the window.
10/19/08 sweet and tender! I wondered how the mother was going to give her a tree. Great descriptions!
Just delightful characterization, and I'm with Verna--just the kind of story I like to put me in the Christmas mood. (and just FYI, when I saw your clue, I thought "rectangle and rectangle?" LOL)
I was worried they would try to take the tree on the bus and the mean driver wasn't going to allow it ;) Very nice story.
Wendy's anticipation is so endearing. You've taken a seemingly simple theme and captured it with vivid images and nuances. The Bing Crosby references add to the wonder and magic and take readers subtly back into the past. Very enjoyable. Your writing is seamless. I learn much from writing like this. Excellent!
Silver Bells definitely took this reader back and Kresges too. Very nostelgic and creatively done.
I love Wendy's unbridled enthusiasm. A very sweet story.
Your first paragraph is beautiful and captured me in the moment. I've never heard of "vanilla waffles"… they sound wonderful…. I may have to try them. :) I remember Kresge's. :) I loved your trip down memory lane.
Nice work! I enjoyed this piece. :)
