as currents rise from depths of darkness seizing all control.
Each crashing wave serves to remind me of my mortal state,
and growling seas surround my craft while murmering my fate.
I try to grasp some stable mast, but nothing holds me true.
I cry to skies above the deep that once were clear and blue.
No haven in this storm tossed sea presents a hope or gleam,
as darkness strides with heaving tides and covers everything.
The only light is heaven’s spear that strikes with deadly fire,
scorching to the very core with terror’s cackling ire.
This storm of fear, of pain and hurt, grows stronger with each swell,
as I look up through ocean walls that seem to mirror hell.
How can a mortal bear such fear alone upon the sea?
What can a mere man do or think to save such frailty?
Does God not care that I will drown within a sea of fright?
Must I be swallowed in this pit of panic in the night?
Great God above! Can you not hear? Nor can you even see
the horror that controls my heart and feeds upon my need?
What’s this I feel? A strange new warmth within this savage wind?
How can this be when only cold has reigned throughout this din?
“My Child, I’m here. Can you not see? Nor know My very breath?
Can you not feel My hand on yours? My hand of life and death.”
“Where were you, Child, when this My hand formed oceans where you weep?
Where were you when I hung the stars and planets o’er the deep?”
“Give Me your hand, and I will teach you how to hold me near.
You are not meant to face alone the power of such fear.”
These words rain down upon my soul and flow into my heart.
Their warmth brings strange new easiness into my trembling parts.
I feel the strength of God’s own hand supporting me within,
and then He leads me from the boat and speaks to me again.
“I am the only craft you need to walk on waves of fear.
I am the safety that you seek when clouds of pain appear.”
“I am the whisper that outshouts the thunder of distress,
and I am here to walk you to a place of quiet rest.”
As I obey and step with Him upon the churning waves,
He speaks to me, “Look now, My Child, only on My face.”
No longer do I hear the roar of raging ocean’s rant.
No longer am I flung in fear along dread terror’s path.
For my God walks and talks with me and sings His loving psalms,
as He absorbs all fear and storms and holds me in His calm.
"He got up and rebuked the wind and the raging waters; the storm subsided and all was calm."
Luke 8:25a NIV
