A towering, og’ring freak
With horns to shade his baldness,
Whose breath came with a shriek.
One closed his eyes and trembled
In scared paralysis:
What kind of neighbour was this?
What promised land was this?!
Two looked and saw a demon,
A sharply glittering thing;
Incisive eyes like lasers
Judged every living thing.
Two, horrified, disgusted,
His lip curled firm and tight,
Decided not to venture
Beyond this loathsome sight.
Three looked and saw a soldier
In mufti, stretched at ease,
All powerful and mighty,
And shook at both his knees.
This man could pulverise them,
Could drive them all away,
Could torment, torture, bully –
It wasn’t safe to stay.
Four looked and saw his brother -
Or one almost like him –
Who’d sneer and jeer and badger
Until he just gave in.
He bowed his head and turned,
Sidestepped confrontation:
The path of least resistance
Would be his salvation.
Five looked and saw the boss,
A hard and flinty sort,
Who pushed his entire staff
Much more than any ought.
The look of this great monster
Was more than he could bear,
And so he turned his heart away –
He’d not take one step there.
Six looked and saw her father,
A silent, distant man,
Who never knew if she
Were in this or the next land.
What neighbour could this be,
Silent and ignorant?
Not for the sixth, a land of bleak
Men so indifferent.
Seven saw a businessman,
All great and powerful;
A man of sharp acumen
Who was nobody’s fool.
His eyes like scales bore through her
And found her less than least.
The seventh wasn’t anxious
To tackle this great beast.
Eight saw Hate and Anger
And Greed all wrapped in one;
Overwhelming enemy –
Had anybody won
A battle fought against him –
She couldn’t think of one.
This wouldn’t be a good place
To let the children run.
Nine saw Endless Effort
Stretched across the plain:
Ceaseless toil and watching,
Do and do again.
He saw constant vigilance
To rout the foe and wrest
The land from them – and never
Would there be only rest.
Ten saw needless striving
For a sacred end.
If God did seek to bless them,
Surely He would send
His angels on to scatter
And disarm the foe,
And secure the promised land
For those that He loved so.
But Joshua and Caleb
Alone saw God’s design
And grasped the holy purpose
Of His Almighty mind:
He’d make a way before them
Who’d worship only Him;
No need to fear or worry
Before the King of Kings,
For God Himself had told them
He’d give them this whole land,
And this was where they wanted
To go and take a stand.
In faith they’d crossed the red Sea
Protected by His hand;
Well, now they’d cross the Jordan
And take the Promised Land.
The foes they saw were mighty
And strong and dangerous,
But they knew God Almighty,
The Just and Righteous.
So let the giants wander,
For when they breached Canaan,
They’d worship God and vanquish
All of their Promised Land.
