When I was sorely stressed.
I could not read it right away
Because I was depressed.
Next day, another note arrived.
It joined Your other letter.
My problems for the time were few;
My future seemed much better.
To read them when I had some hours
Was always my intent,
But life was full of joys and woes
And time too quickly spent.
So it went most of my life;
Your notes arrived each day.
I kept them sealed and unread;
I tucked them all away.
O foolish child that I had been
To seek what would not last!
I chased my dreams on godless paths,
The darkness closing fast.
The end draws near, my eyesight dims,
My body strains for breath.
The things I thought I had achieved
Will fade upon my death.
I grasp your many letters
Sent to woo my heart.
Because I would not read them,
We’ll spend eternity apart.
