He heaved a heavy sigh.
“Our programs need more volunteers,
Without you they will die.”
“The crew who cooks meals for the sick
Has dwindled to a few.
The teachers for our Sunday school
Have spiraled down to two.”
“If volunteers do not step up
Our church will surely die
And many folks will feel the loss.
Their needs we won’t supply.”
Then as he scanned his anxious flock
He saw some heads duck down,
Could hear a tiny hairpin drop;
That was the only sound.
He ended, pleading, “At the back
There is a sign-up sheet.
It’s waiting for your signatures,
With many needs to meet.”
Most circled past the pastor’s sheet
As if it wasn’t there
For they had other tasks to do,
Did not have time to spare.
Then Brother Tom mused, Now’s my chance
To hone my acting skills.
I’ll sign up for the Christmas play,
Though it won’t pay my bills.
Just maybe it will help to land
A greater role someday,
Perhaps may further my career,
Enhance my resume.
As Sister Tess stepped up she quirped,
“Seems I’m the only one
To drive the truck for ‘Meals on Wheels’
My work is never done.”
She also saw that no one else
Had filled the empty gap
To gather Christmas toys for tots,
To write cards and to wrap.
Reluctantly she signed her name
To “just one more request”
And hoped that others knew she toiled
Much harder than the rest.
As Brother Ward strolled to the sheet
He signed his name with zest.
To scrub the toilets and the floors
For God, I’m truly blessed!
One day a deadly storm blew through;
The volunteers all died.
They gathered ‘round the Master’s throne
Where they did now reside.
The Master said to Sister Tess,
“You labored hard and long,
But cannot give you My reward,
Your motives they were wrong.”
He turned to Brother Tom and said,
“Your lines, superbly done
But kept the glory for yourself,
Forgot about the SON.”
Then as he opened up his book,
He smiled at Brother Ward.
“Your work was humbly done for Me;
Receive now My reward.”
