“Thanks, it would just ruin my night if nobody did that after a long day. How was the field trip?”
“Great! The whole class had so much fun! I wish you were there with us. Eric was in awe of the dinosaurs. Also, they had a mummy exhibit he was very interested in. Why don’t you ask him about it? He and Jacob are playing in his bedroom.”
The door squeaked, ever so subtly, as it opened to an otherwise silent room. A quick scan had me wondering where the two of them escaped to. As I began to leave, I heard a whisper. I leaned in a little closer, in wonder, at what was so interesting underneath the bed.
“Okay boys, I give up. What in the world are you doing?”
Even before he was out from under the bed, Eric began, at supersonic speed, relating everything he remembered from the museum. When he finally stopped to take a breath, I put on my inquisitive face and said, “Well, that doesn’t explain what you were doing under the bed, does it?”
Jacob’s eyes, which had just been bright with excitement as Eric was reliving their time at the museum, were now firmly fixed on the ground below him. Eric looked right into my eyes, I think realizing this wasn’t going to work out well for him, swallowed hard and admitted, “When we were in the section with the mummies, we learned how to write our names in ‘Anchet Hydrogrifs’…you wanna see?”
I nodded, just a tad worried at what I was about to view, I got down on my belly, and by the light of Eric’s flashlight, gazed upon a very interesting array of artwork, drawn by my six-year old and his best friend on the canvas of his bedroom wall.
“See dad, that arm with a mitten on its hand is the symbol for ‘E’. That eye shaped drawing is the symbol for ‘R’. That thing that looks like a flag is the ‘I’ and that bowl is how you show a ‘C’. That’s how you write my name in mummy!” Eric pointed to the rest of the Crayola artwork… “And that’s JACOB.”
I placed my hand over my mouth, for a good long moment, considering carefully how to respond the situation. I had an idea.
“You know guys, the Bible, in a way, is like these symbols. The writers of the Old Testament would often draw word pictures that symbolized something that would happen later on, in New Testament times. Let me show you.”
I carefully sifted through the crayons to get just the right colors. Then, in between the two boys’ names I drew a lamb in blue, a doorpost in brown and a cross in red. I proceeded to tell them the story of the Egyptian plagues and how the blood of the “Passover lamb” symbolized Jesus, ”The Lamb of God” and his sacrifice for those who would believe in Him.
Then, lowering my voice to a whisper, “I think it would be a good idea to keep this artwork to ourselves, don’t you boys? And let’s make sure we use paper from now on.”
With wide eyes Eric shot out from under the bed. “Mommy, Mommy” he said, as Cindy was rounding the corner. “Come look at our ‘Anchet Hydrogrifs’! Daddy drew one too!” As I slithered out from beneath the bed, I gave Cindy a shrug and a toothy grin, hoping that it would be me, and not our young, enthusiastic son, that would get in trouble (and I did.) He took hold of Cindy’s arm and gently encouraged, “Come on mommy, I’m going to tell you what they all mean.”
