I first met Carol because her sister was dating my best friend. We didn't have much in common at first, but over time I grew interested enough to consider asking her out on a date. She had needed a ride for the youth event and afterwards provided the ideal opportunity to take a risk. It had made perfect sense, but the result had been awkward and disastrous. The pain was about the worst that I had ever experienced at the time, but God still managed to use it to teach me a lesson that was more important than my relationship with Carol.
I recall being myself, which included making jokes at every opportunity. I sought to overcome my natural shyness by being funny; the life of the party. I enjoyed it and others seemed to as well, but Carol made it clear that she saw things very differently. She interpreted my need to be funny, to be a clown, as an indication that I was unable to be serious about God or being a follower of Jesus. Her response hit me right between the eyes. My only response was to drive her home in silence. It was one of the longest trips of my life and I was relieved when she disappeared into the night.
I returned home crushed and shaken, but it forced me to face up to some severe realities in my life. In seeking to overcome my shyness, I had chosen my own path and not God's path. I can't say I completely agreed with Carol, I still thought there was a place for humor in the life of a Jesus follower, but I was forced to admit that I had gone too far. In acting the clown, I had missed out on all that God had for me. That memory of pain still remains, but God took it and made me a better person for it and for that I will always be grateful.
