Winning a football game requires every player to play his own specific role with excellence. If just one position isn’t played well it can cost them the game.
If it weren’t for great offensive linemen (the ones most likely to never touch the football), even the very best quarterbacks are vulnerable to having hundreds of pounds breaking through the line and pounding them into the ground. Without tough offensive linemen, the best running backs and wide receivers don’t get the chance to make spectacular catches that make the highlight reels or get a chance to juke and power their way through mammoth sized players for impressive rushing yards. In fact, over the course of 54 years of Super Bowls, not one offensive lineman has ever won the Most Valued Player award. They may not bask in the limelight or win the MVP awards, but without them there wouldn’t be any awe inspiring players.
Just as there is no going it alone in football, there is no going it alone in the Church, either. Each of us has been given specific gifts, but we all share the same mission—to add tp His kingdom and build up the Church.
While some gifts put people in the limelight, other gifts are played behind the scenes, but both play an equally important role. Like Paul said in Romans 12:1-4, “Just as our bodies have many parts and each part has a special function, so it is with Christ’s body, and we all belong to each other.”
How do we discover which roles God has chosen for us? God places dreams in our hearts, following those desires brings fulfillment. Are we finding fulfillment in our work for Him? Do we find ourselves being affirmed in accomplishing the tasks God has placed on our hearts? If so, I believe we are accomplishing the God has created us to do before the creation of the world.
If we work together as one body, with the same mission, I believe God will bless our faithfulness by adding to His numbers daily, offering the perfect peace that is only found in accepting Jesus Christ as our Savior and Lord.
