“No, she is still sitting in front of her vanity putting on her lipstick,” I reported to my older sister. “I think she has wiped it off and put it back on several times already.”
“I don’t understand why it takes so long to look good. Did you notice all the hair spray she put on her hair? It is stiff as a board.”
“That’s so the wind won’t mess up her hair. I think even a tornado couldn’t mess it up.”

My sister and I were very young when we stayed with my Aunt Helen and my Grandparents. Like normal kids, we were impatient when we anticipated going to town or to church. Waiting for my Aunt to get ready seemed like an eternity. Yet, she prolonged the agony while making sure every hair was perfectly styled and her lipstick didn’t overstep the natural lines on her lips.
Did my aunt have a problem with vanity? It would seem so, but who am I to judge. Only God knows the heart.
I do know that this same aunt sang in the choir, sang for weddings and funerals, and, more importantly, took us girls to church and bible school every summer. That is where I first learned of Jesus. I looked forward to those summers and my church times with my aunt.
Aunt Helen also taught me how to play the piano. The very first song I learned to play was, “What a Friend We Have in Jesus.” Years later, I used my talents to lead worship in a small inner city church.
The best thing my aunt ever did for me, however, was give me a bible. At a time when I was going through a tough battle in my life, I started reading that bible. Drawn by the Holy Spirit, I read the entire book and ended up giving my life to the Lord. I have been serving Him ever since.
The thing that is most encouraging to me is that even though we, as Christians, might have a problem in some area, such as vanity, pride, selfishness, or whatever, we can still be used of God to bring another to the Lord. There may be areas in our personality that God is still working on or he hasn’t brought to our attention yet. Others may see faults in us that we don’t see. Yet, God can still use us to accomplish his purposes in our lives or others.
Is she ready yet? Well, Aunt Helen is ninety years old now and it takes longer than ever to get ready to go somewhere. Is she ready to meet the Lord? It would seem so, but only God knows the heart. I am just so glad she introduced me to Jesus years ago.
