There they sat – the fiends, the betrayers – arrayed in their finest gowns at the banquet table of the Empress Darlagonia. And here she stood, her bland armor falling in disarray from her most recent battle. In vain, she looked from one courtesan to another, seeking in their eyes some sign of understanding. All she saw was bitter resentment.
The Empress, a smug expression turning her ordinarily beautiful face into an ugly chasm of death, coldly pointed to the far end of the courtroom. “You can eat your lunch over there.”
A single tear broke free. Gathering all her dignity, Zoe lifted her chin and turned to find an alternative spot to eat her lunch.
She settled for a table on the far side of the lunchroom, her back facing the unsympathetic group of 5th grade girls that she had, only last week, considered her friends. How could they turn on her so quickly? How could they think that she was stuck-up, that she didn’t like them, that she could have said such horrible things about them…
“So, is it true?”
Zoe looked up to see Sandra standing tentatively on the other side of the table – proud, unsociable Sandra who considered herself so much better than everyone else that she never spoke to anyone.
The Fairy Magician Warrior rose to her feet, her magical sword in hand, ready to do battle with the unfeeling executioner.
“It’s hard isn’t it.”
The words were softly spoken, and Zoe felt her defenses begin to drop.
“Can I sit with you?”
Zoe nodded.
Sensing the unexpected presence of a comrade in arms, the Fairy Magician Warrior extended the right hand of fellowship.
“What really happened?” Sandra asked. “Why did you miss Darla’s sleepover?”
“I was SICK!” No longer able to be contained, the tears Zoe had fought so gallantly to contain burst forth in the presence of a compassionate listener. “I didn’t miss the party because I was proud and thought I was better than everyone else…”
The Fairy Magician Warrior stopped short in her defense. An unpleasant memory burst into her mind – the image of a fairy she had presumed guilty and consigned to a life in chains, without trial, without question…
Zoe looked at Sandra, her eyes wide in realization. “You don’t really think you’re better than everyone else, either, do you?”
Sandra shook her head. “I’m kind of nervous about talking to people, so usually I don’t even try. But I do know how it feels to be lied about.”
“That good-for-nothing Darla,” Zoe grumbled. Hot anger fought its way in to take the place of her pain and self-pity.
The Fairy Magician Warrior and her new sidekick, the Fairy Princess, stood up and strode across the courtroom, weapons drawn, ready for battle. They would show the Empress, and everyone else, what happens when you make false accusations!
“Come on, Sandra! There’s two of us now. Let’s go tell everyone what Darla’s really like!”
“Zoe, wait!” Sandra reached across the table and grabbed hold of Zoe’s arm. “What will it prove if you start spreading bad things about Darla?”
“What I tell people will be the truth!”
“But will it help her? Will it help them?”
“Are you saying we should just be quiet and take it? That we should do nothing to fight the lies she spreads?”
Sandra shook her head. Her eyes were steady and her voice, in contrast to its usual quiet uncertainty, was firm and resolute. “We don’t do nothing. We do what I did today, and what you just did. We make it our mission to learn the truth about what we hear, and to help others who are being lied about.”
Zoe paused and considered her new friend’s words.
The Youngest, Greatest, Fairy Magician Warrior and her partner, the Fairy Queen, flew out of the courtroom to begin their greatest quest yet: searching out the powerful truths that would bring an end to the empire of lies.
