“Thank goodness today won’t be a repeat of yesterday.” Her whole demeanour was changing as she bounced out of bed, sending Marmaduke skittering under a chest of drawers to stare at her indignantly.
“Yes, my boy, today will be more interesting.” As Amelia washed and dressed her mood escalated with each moment, a smile at her reflection eliciting another comment to herself. “I thought I didn’t know how easy it was to fall into apathy, but now I’ve seen for myself I won’t let it happen again. She had woken yesterday feeling weary and disorganised, unable to settle her mind on anything constructive. Only because she had promised to deliver a parcel did she venture out into the autumn breezes, hoping they would blow away her melancholia. She had headed to the seafront walking head down, her scarf billowing while she conducted a conversation with her Lord. “I don’t understand it, Lord. I’m never bored, but now I don’t know what to do with myself. It’s as if everything in my favour is against me. Please help me; show me the way out of the doldrums.”
Kicking at pebbles she was surprised to hear footsteps behind her, and turned when a voice interrupted her reverie. “None better to ask for help,” said a little lady, buttoned up in a brightly coloured coat, and with a knitted bonnet partially covering white curls.
“I didn’t realise I was talking aloud,” Amelia stammered, “but I didn’t know where else to turn.”
“I always find that the best thing to do when you’re in the doldrums, is to stir the stream,” her new friend smiled. “I’ve been there myself, but not very often.”
“That’s the thing. I’m not used to feeling jaded and that’s where I am today.” It didn’t seem strange at all to be talking to a stranger and it wasn’t long before they had exchanged names and she was invited to join Judith for tea at a nearby café.
“I Have a hobby you may be interested in that will keep you occupied and inventive,” Judith said as she stirred sugar into her cup and eyed the cream cakes they had ordered.
“Hmmm! Tell me more.”
“Well, obviously we have something in common that we love the Lord and consult Him when we have problems. Perhaps He intended us to meet as we did.”
Amelia nodded her head in agreement and looked a question.
“You will be familiar with the passage in Jeremiah about the potter and the clay and it was that passage that encouraged me to experiment with porcelain clay which has become a real passion and thrills my grandchildren when I make castles and ornaments for them.”
“Oh, yes! That was something I wanted to try at school, or rather, the potter’s wheel, but I was not considered arty enough.”
“Well there you are. I shall bring you a piece of clay tomorrow, and you can play with it to your hearts content. I shall print you some general instructions, then you can let your mind show you what is hidden inside.”
So that was why Amelia was excited this morning. She had arranged to meet Judith at the same café, and her mind was reeling with ideas. Maybe she would fashion a dove of peace or an angel to remind her how Jesus met her every need. She was off to the Potters House to see how she would be guided some more.
