Jessie slides down beside Elanor on the oversized sectional. Elanor turns giving him a peck on the cheek. “You got your lesson done quickly.”
“I knew the kids were coming, so I prepared it ahead. I was just reviewing, to have it fresh in my mind for tomorrow.”
“I love having the kids come visit, but I do get tired.” Ellie said laying her head on Jessie’s shoulder. “I don’t know where you find the energy to keep teaching the young adults classes.”
“I think God lets me absorb some extra energy from those kids. I prefer to work with the youth; they are the future of the Church.”
“I know Jessie. I’ve always loved your zeal for God, but I still don’t know how you do it.”
The cell phone buzzed in Ellie’s purse at the end of the couch. “A text? Who could that be at this hour? It is from Nathan.”
The text said, “Wish I could c u tonight, but I won’t get in until 2am. Will c u at church. Hope we can spend the day together? Miss u!”
“Now really, Ellie after forty-eight years do I still have to fight off the young-uns?” Jessie teased.
“Jessie, you know better.” Elanor poked him with an elbow. “Nathan must have hit the wrong address in the dark.”
Nathan had cared for their yard last summer. Jessie had taken Nathan under his wing to disciple before he left for college. He became family.
“Ah … Elanor and Elaine, they do start the same.” Jessie admitted.
“Well, I better tell him”. Elanor picks up her phone and glasses and begins to tediously punch out a text …
“No, this is too good to let go.” Jessie snatches Elanor’s phone.
“Jessie, shame on you.” Elanor takes her phone. Another text comes in.
“My thoughts are so full of you … Can hardly stand the wait … the last couple months apart … hard. Can’t wait until we can be together always.”
Elenor reads out loud. “Oh my, it does seem as if they have gotten very serious.”
“Good for them. They will both be a blessing to the other.”
“But Jessie, I am not going to continue eve-dropping...”
“Here let me answer him.” Jessie takes the phone and starts punching.
“Stop Nathan! Texting and driving is dangerous. See U tomorrow.”
“Mr. Crawford, you are unbelievable.”
“You think he should be texting while he is driving, huh?”
“You know that is not what I mean.”
The next morning after the church service Jessie stops just outside the sanctuary doors and winks at Elanor. She rolls her eyes, “I’ll have no part in this. Take it easy on them Jess.”
She steps aside to a group of women, one of which was Elaine’s mother, Sharon. “You look a little flustered Elanor. Is everything o.k.?”
“Jessie is at his pranks again. This time the victims are to be Elaine and Nathan.”
Sharon looks quizzically. “Oh?
Elaine and Nathan stroll out of the auditorium holding hands.
“Now if you two don’t look like a couple of lovebirds.” Jessie catches their attention.
“How you been Jess?” Nathan reaches out and shakes hands.
“You look pert considering you didn’t get in until 2 a.m.” Jessie says looking abnormally serious.
“Two a.m.? No wonder you didn’t come by. I waited up ‘til midnight.” Elaine says.
Nathan looks between the two confused. “I…
Jessie quickly interrupts. “You two know I think the most of both of you. I have reason to believe that you might be getting serious. I feel responsible to tell you something Elaine.
At this point both Nathan and Elaine exchange glances.
Jessie steps over putting his arm over Elaine’s shoulder to be sure she does not flee. Settling his gaze soberly on Nathan he continues…”Nathan hasn’t been completely honest with you Elaine. He is involved with another woman.”
“Nnoo! That is absolutely not true.” Nathan eyes beg Elaine to believe.
“Oh yes, Nathan I have the proof. One more thing … you really should pick on someone your own age. Elanor dear would you please bring the proof.”
“Relax kids. Nathan accidently sent Elaine’s texts to me last night. Dear I’d say you have nothing to worry about. Elanor handed her phone to Elaine.”
Nathan’s hands thump his head; his face is a flaming screen of emotions - agony – relief - embarrassment. “Ah Jess, that was mean.”
Elaine squeezes Nathan’s hand. He instinctively pulls her close ignoring the surrounding laughter.
