Adam could feel Tom's harsh breath as he accosted him on the small patio that ran adjacent to the church's main sanctuary. Adam instinctively pushed Tom away as he replied, "What are you talking about?"
"You know."
"I don't know."
"How could you bring that little girl to church with you?"
"Oh that's what you're talking about. My close friends are having marital problems. I wanted to give them a break so that they could try to work through some issues."
"You've got your own issues, man. You're going through a divorce. Don't you know that she can use something like this against you?"
"What do you mean?"
"She will say you are abusing that child."
"What?!"
Adam's mind was reeling at Tom's accusations.
"How can you even think that?"
Tom's eyes drifted downward as he replied, "adults hurt kids. You know how it happened to me. You know what my uncle did to me when I was young."
Adam quickly placed an arm of comfort on his friend. He could feel the pain of Tom's childhood memories as they made Tom physically shake.
"I'm so sorry, Tom. I am so sorry for all that was done to you when you were young. I never meant to cause you pain."
Tom turned away. Feelings of rage had been replaced by the pain of being violated and exposed to so much pain at such an early age. Tom turned back toward Adam and said, "just think about what you are doing, okay?"
"I will," Adam replied simply.
Adam somberly walked away. He wanted to justify his actions, but Tom's honesty had spoken deep within his soul. He had much to think about and pray about and some things he knew he needed to change.
