They’d been giving one account after another of failed attempts to take the enemy captive and manipulate their thoughts. Doubt and fear had always been the two simplest torments, requiring very little effort. They were even finding it impossible to trick them into not trusting each other and that almost never failed.
“I don’t understand what has changed,” said Sathanus. He’d been at this the longest of them all, and usually he was oozing confidence when talking of his conquests. No one liked him, but they all admitted he had the most impressive list of trainwrecked lives in his wake. He was the one they went to when nothing seemed to be working. To see him frustrated and confused was quite discouraging for all of them.
“Their ego’s are so fragile, it’s always been ridiculously easy to get them high centered and worried about what someone else thinks of them, or to second guess themselves if a friend disagrees. They are so pathetic, all they ever think about is themselves. Up until now they haven’t even been a challenge. I was actually getting bored with them altogether, but now this new group of ‘believers’ has me chewing nails and spewing sulfur.” Belphegor usually never said a word so they were all surprised. “I hate them! It seems like our tried and true tactics have no effect on them at all!”
Drooling as he spoke, Asmodeus suggested, “We need to watch them more closely and discover their secret, they seem to know something that makes them immune to us.” He loved to watch his targets, for hours he would observe, planting thoughts of lust in their minds. Then he would celebrate with glee while they acted on those thoughts. But none of the targets in this group seemed to be hearing him.
Bill smiled as Jerry entered the room. It always felt best when they were all together. Everyone agreed, they felt stronger when their body was complete.
After Andy led them in worship they opened their Bibles and began sharing the nuggets they’d each gleaned since their last meeting. It was so rewarding for Bill to hear the enthusiasm, he never dreamed they would come this far, all because of one decision.
He remembered the day, sitting under a tree with his Bible, he’d heard the Lord challenge him to truly believe and live what he read in the Word. At the time he was reading Paul’s words to “reckon himself dead.” He began fervently praying that God would teach him how to die. As he learned and grew in this area he shared with some of his brothers what he was experiencing. Eventually, because of the changes they saw in his life, they banded together to learn and live these principles too. It wasn’t long before they were meeting together three times a week, just as they were tonight, to encourage and pray for one another.
“Lame!” “Not very original!” and “That’s just plain stupid!” were some of the responses when they told others the name of the group. DEAD MEN WALKING was what they called themselves, because that is exactly what they were. Dead to themselves but alive to Christ. They held each other accountable to die daily.
Whenever they saw one of their brothers stumbling over their ego or a pride issue they would meet and pray. Then a couple of them would approach that brother in love and share what they were learning about being dead to this world. As God added to their group they all became stronger.
Outside, the demons were shoving and climbing all over each other trying to get a glimpse of what was going on inside.
“How are we ever going to beat them if we aren’t even allowed near them?” Asmodeus asked.
Sathanus responded. “I’m done with them! They’re not worth the trouble. I’ve been neglecting the high school, and there’s three families that recently moved to the area, that new church plant has been going too smoothly… you can all stay and obsess over these losers, but I’m moving on to more fun.”
