They seem like TV boxes, and they appear heavy so they must have TVs in them. The bikes are held together with bamboo rods which are attached to the bikes with twine wound around the bike frames. Are they really going to ride together?
But yes, the load is being stacked as one. A rough piece of plywood straddles both bikes, making a bridge to support the growing pile. As each box is added I think that will be the last, but then another is brought out from the store and added to the stack. Eventually they decide it is enough and the load is secured, eighteen cartons in all. Almost a whole ball of twine is used to tie the boxes to each other and to the bikes.
I stay and watch, I’m not in a hurry to go anywhere. Enticing smells from nearby food stalls will draw me soon for lunch. People hurry by; after all, to the locals, these sights are common. To me as a tourist it is fascinating.
The two lads mount their bikes and ride off in unison, bikes tethered yet apart. Their load is secure, in spite of the precarious appearance. They move out into the stream of traffic, making their way through honking cars, buses, trucks, and dozens of other bikes.
Several scriptures come to mind, as I watch and marvel. In our western countries machines and forklifts and trucks streamline cartage, but in poorer countries where some people can’t afford trucks other solutions must be found. I am being given a lesson in ingenuity and cooperation, working together for a common goal.
I see a glimpse of what Christ meant when he said to take his yoke. He shares the load and it is in working together that we progress. Paul said to bear one another’s burdens. One of these TVs would have been difficult to carry any distance by one person, yet supported by two bikes and two riders and expertly stacked, eighteen have been transported together. The burden is lightened even though increased 18-fold. When overwhelmed with life’s burdens we need to call for help and think of creative solutions.
Am I working in cooperation with God to do his work on earth? Am I yoked to him and working in unison with him to get the task done? Do I work together with my fellow-believers, in harmony and united in purpose? As I head toward those delicious aromas I thank God for reminding me today of lessons from his word.
