My living room has a special guest: a green chair. It was not always green. Simply look beneath the recovering fabric and 1970’s gold corduroy can be found. When my mom passed away 15 years ago, I inherited the chair, along with its acrid smell of smoke. It took weeks to get rid of the odor. Patience won so I was finally able to breathe new life into the chair. I had a special purpose in mind. After hand sewing the final covered button to the front of the chair, my master dream was coming to fruition.
Drum roll please… Allow me to introduce you to my special green prayer chair. This is where I spend at least an hour daily in quiet time with God. My journal has logged many hours of seat time, and my endless array of bible translations nearby have as well while in hot pursuit of just the right passage. The diversity of the translations has broad appeal. They essentially say the same things yet a tweak here or there, or creative wordsmithing adds more character to a scripture passage that speaks straight to my heart.
For 15 years it has served me well. I consider it sacred ground because this is where the Holy Spirit swirls within me. This happens when writing to God and waiting for replies. Before beginning to understand a scripture passage, not from historical or theological perspective, but rather how the passage speaks to mean, what it says to me, how it applies to my life, I sing a little prayer invoking the Holy Spirit’s guidance.
Holy Spirit come and fill this space.
Fill me with your loving warm embrace.
Holy Spirit swirl within me now.
Holy Spirit come and fill this place.
After a gracious thank you to complete my prayer, my eyes read a passage. As of late, they are from a format designed to help make peace with food. Soon, friends and I have plans for a discernment bible study. My eagerness has me bubbling up with joy and the enthusiasm is boiling over into my daily life. I am so psyched about this new journey we will soon embark. Holy Spirit, I will most assuredly need you, as if I don’t need you enough already. Thank you for never letting me down. Your heavenly whispers of insights leave me in awe of your vast kindness and grace.
There are times when I have set priorities aside when other ones appear on my doorstep. This has been the case with me for the past few years with my journal writing. I so miss my living room time with Jesus. He shows up daily to pen me a love letter. Sadly, I’ve crowded out that time with other worthwhile Christian pursuits of spiritual enlightenment. Nothing is as uplifting as sitting with my journal, the chair swiveled around to see the rose garden, and wait on inspiration from Jesus. This is where mystical works of God appear. Literally, out of nowhere, my pen starts flowing so fast I can barely keep up. I never know what the next word or line is going to spell out.
Breathless is how it feels when my time with God comes to an end. Of course, it does not truly end there: I speak with God throughout my day, and listen for the soft whispers of the Holy Spirit’s guidance to set me on the paths least travelled.
Even though others are not on this same journey with me, I take pleasure in my time with God in my green prayer chair.
