And though long ago, I remember it still.
It scared all the children in our neighborhood.
It looked evil and creepy, not wholesome or good.
Dark paint chipped shutters framed shattered windows.
Some were left open, and some were barred closed.
Ivy surrounded its tattered walls;
It looked like a setting for bad monster balls.
My gang and I were so anxious to see
What captured our nightmares and our fantasy.
We looked through the windows, and no one was there.
Sparky, my champion, spoke out on a dare.
“Let someone go through the milk shute so tight.”
So we chose darling Roger, who was tiny and light.
I in my sundress and blonde ponytail
Broke out with a cry and started to wail.
My chubby cheeks cast down; my eyes full of tears.
I was still wise for my trembling four years.
“No, don’t go in; it’s not godly you see
To break into someone’s own property.
But, they didn’t listen; they cast me aside
Looking for Frankenstein, maybe his bride.
They pulled back the thistle; they pushed back the thorn
Surrounding the old house all shattered and torn.
Just as they pried the milk shute so rusty,
Fumes rose through the air so musty and dusty.
The owner arrived at just the right minute,
Caught Sparky and Roger as they tried to climb in it.
“What are you doing?” the man yelled in anger.
“Just what are you seeking, madness and danger?”
Then I in a grown up voice I said with a smile,
“We’re looking for Sparky’s cat; it’s lost for awhile.”
“Well, go away quickly ‘fore I call your folks.
I’m tired of your gang with your pranks and your jokes.
Go now, get out of here, forget that cat!
I’m telling you sternly, take off, hurry, scat!”
Chuckles erupted from our grinning faces
Running like Hercules, just like the races.
When I got home, I confessed to my mother,
Who listened so carefully, not like another.
She said, “I’m so glad you didn’t go in.
It’s a very bad thing, and God calls it sin.
We must be different; we just can’t adhere
To things that are evil. God’s Word makes it clear.”
So, when Sparky and the gang came later to play,
I said, “I love Jesus, and bad games I can’t play.”
They nodded their heads saying, “Kathy, you’re queen
Because you are good, and you saved our sad scene.”
